Dose

500 mg daily to 2 grams twice daily depending on the patient's weight, age, and the condition being treated

Indications

Treating moderate to severe complications of lupus or vasculitis; may be useful in other rheumatic diseases as well

Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are the most common side effects. Rash, headache, tremor, or difficulty sleeping are less frequently reported. Anemia or a decrease in white blood cells or platelets may also occur. Liver enzymes may become elevated; less commonly, potassium or phosphorus levels may decrease, and blood glucose or cholesterol levels may increase while taking this drug. While generally less of a problem than with other immunosuppressive drugs, patients are more susceptible to infection when taking this medication.

Monitoring

Blood counts and liver enzymes should be done monthly initially, then every 1-3 months once the patient is on a stable dose of the medication.

Important Points to Know

Capsules should not be crushed or opened. To improve absorption, this medication should be taken on an empty stomach. Antacids should particularly be avoided for 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking this drug. Many other medications (Questran, Zovirax, Imuran, Theophylline, Dilantin, Benemid, and aspirin, e.g.) may also interfere with mycophenolate mofetil. Sunscreens should be utilized, and prolonged exposure to sunlight should be avoided. For women, birth control should be practiced while taking this medication and for 6 weeks after it is discontinued. It should also not be given to mothers who are breastfeeding.
