Side Effects

The most common problem experienced with pilocarpine is excessive sweating. Less commonly, a rapid heartbeat, light-headedness, loose stools, nausea, cough, or retaining fluid may be noted. These side effects tend to be less bothersome with continued use of the drug.

Important Points to Know

If sweating becomes a problem with this medication, be sure to increase fluid intake accordingly. It is important to know whether dizziness is a problem for you after taking this drug before operating machinery or driving. If these reactions continue to be bothersome, check with your provider. Pilocarpine used in combination with certain heart or stomach medications can result in an increased frequency of side effects.
